The Homemaking Skills Institute Manual

Our Manual is the basic document of our training programs.  In addition, we believe that the Manual is an excellent guide for people starting to manage households, such as newly weds.  Also, we have been told by someone who was recently widowed that the Manual is extremely helpful in learning how to function on ones own. Going to the grocery store can be overwhelming especially when trying to figure out which seasonings are the best for the dish to be prepared.  This manual has helped to make selecting seasonings more adventures.  We believe that having your own personal copy of this manual is like having your own personal copy of a dictionary, it is loaded with much needed information to help live a successful life as a first time mom, newly wed, single, transitioning back into society or just wanting to be a better you.

The Homemaking Skills Institute Manual

The Homemaking Skills Institute Manual by Betty Jo Nichols is the textbook for our training programs.  The manual is also available for $20.00 through this website. Click here to see the Manual Table of Contents and an excerpt of the Manual.

Manual Excerpts
Etiquette
What really is etiquette?  When do we use it and is it necessary?
"There are four ways, and only four ways, in which we have contact with the world. We are evaluated and classified by these four contacts: what we do, how we look, what we say, and how we say it." –
Dale Carnegie (1888-1955) American Educator

That's it. We are classified by everything we do, by how we conduct ourselves in the public in all situations. Just remember that in real life everything does matter. Everything you say and do will be remembered, especially if not too flattering. That is why gossiping is so popular.

Health & Fitness
To eat according to the new food pyramid, you need to be knowledgeable about each food group. Then you can translate the facts into actions that will help control your weight and stay healthy. If by now you have not paid any attention to the nutrition facts panel on food packages, it is important to start doing so now.

Personal Hygeine
Good hygiene includes the absence of dirt or of bad odors/smells. Since germs are so easy to attract hygiene has come to mean any practice leading to the absence of harmful levels of bacteria. Good hygiene is a direct aid to good health. It directly aids in disease prevention and keep illness to a minimum.

Laundry
How to do laundry is a subject that should be covered by parents in the early stages of development. But for some reason if that did not happen in your life and you have no clue as to how to go about washing your own clothes or the clothes of others this is a quick 101 crash course on how it is done.

Motivational Skills
Successful people believe in themselves, they try despite normal uncertainties, and when they don't succeed, they try a new approach without giving up and saying I should have never tried it. The road to success is built by hard work, not good intentions. If you've never failed, then you never did anything new and challenging.  Success rests on overcoming failures. Most people just don't fail enough to succeed. Accept the fact that you will fail more than once, and in many different ways. If you believe that you will achieve your goals without setbacks, then you have just created a recipe for failure. Successful people
turn the negative events that are sure to occur into learning experiences, and then they adjust accordingly and move on.
